Environmentally Sensitive Areas Management Strategy
ESA and Oceanfront District
Connecting the community to the shoreline is a central piece of the vision for the Oceanfront District. We recognize that a big part of accomplishing this vision is ensuring that the natural environment, both on land and in water, is properly protected. However, this requires a flexible and dynamic approach that responds to the specific needs of each ecosystem.
The proposal by the City in 2020 for the Environmentally Sensitive Areas Management Strategy did not reflect our need. It proposed a rigid 30 metre setback along the shore, essentially cutting off the water’s edge and heavily restricting uses within that setback.
We look forward to working with our environmental consultants, local stewards, stakeholders, and the City to find the best possible strategy to protect the natural environment around us.
